Euro Summer, Race Relations, Paying the White Price

This 18th solo episode is released just in time for our Overseas Man Retreat in Costa Rica! I’ve been looking forward to this for over a year, and it’s finally here. We’ll be 10 men this year. Hoping that number grows in the future.

I talk more about what Saturday Night Live has become. Every skit we watched last Saturday was either racial or anti-Trump propaganda. Although they’ve always poked fun at presidents, it used to be funny. Now it feels more like Colbert or Kimmel. Makes you wonder if Lorne Michaels is compromised. Because there’s no way he finds it funny now.

I also dive into current events, race relations, paying what I call the “white price,” our upcoming European vacation, and other stuff.

Other topics covered:
  • Learning to be a good company for yourself
  • Balancing self-accountability with celebrating personal achievements
  • Journaling & meditation
  • 1985 film Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox
  • Dennis Miller/Norm MacDonald vs Michael Che on SNL’s Weekend Update
  • Leslie Jones theory and the potential impact of DEI on SNL’s humor
  • Shift in SNL’s tone from traditional satire to performative camaraderie i.e. Colin Jost
  • Key & Peele’s low-budget yet effective comedy compared to SNL
  • Childhood memories of substitute teachers & classroom behavior
  • Leftist political violence (Pres. Trump & Elon Musk)
  • Shift from serial killings to mass shootings
  • Restrictions on scooters in certain areas of Budapest
  • Adolf Eichmann & his role in the Holocaust
  • The Happiest Man on Earth: The Beautiful Life of an Auschwitz Survivor by Eddie Jaku
  • Calling somebody a traitor then vs now
  • Jim Norton’s comment on Elon Musk’s political alignment & its impact on public support
  • The military’s decision to rehire personnel who were dismissed
  • Summer visits to Grandma’s house
  • Race relations in America
  • Impact of OJ Simpson’s trial verdict on race relations
  • Obama’s political communication skills
  • Thomas Sowell’s critique of Obama’s rhetoric & judicial philosophy
  • Scott Adams’ analogy of US-China trade relations as an abusive relationship
  • Allegation of coordinated efforts by intelligence agencies to undermine Donald Trump
  • Former FBI Director James Comey’s texts during the Clinton email investigation
  • Pres. Trump releasing JFK, MLK, and RFK files
  • Taking the family to Europe this summer
  • Corporations asking customers to fund their charitable/environmental initiatives
  • Paying the white price around the world
  • America’s consumer culture
  • Cultural differences & frugality of Europeans

  • Gurwinder’s Baumol’s Cost Disease
  • How tipping expectations have risen along with inflation
  • Taxpayer funding of migrant programs
  • Political shift in New York (Mayor Eric Adams)
  • Creative restaurant discount for customers in Thailand
  • Getting a positive Apple Podcasts review
  • My daughter’s new rhyme
